Nowadays, the English grammar is one of the most important aspects of
teaching English in the secondary and high school. Grammar is the backbone of a
language and without it any speech is impossible to understand. Songs and music
videos are the effective types of art-technologies. I want to give you a list
of songs in English that can help to teach some grammar.
If you want to practise the comparative degree as .. as ... (the degrees
of comparison of adjectives), so the most appropriate song is «Everything at
once» (Lenka):
As sly as a fox, as strong as an ox.
As fast as a hare, as brave as a bear.
As free as a bird, as neat as a word.
As quiet as a mouse, as big as a house.
For the learning
of Present Continuous you can use the following songs: «Sailing» (Rod Stewart),
«Don’t Speak» (No Doubt), «Lemon tree» (Fool’s Garden):
It’s just another rainy Sunday afternoon
I’m wasting my time
I got nothing to do
I’m hanging around
I’m waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder
I’m driving around in my car
I’m driving too fast
I’m driving too far
I’d like to change my point of view
I feel so lonely
I’m waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder.
Take notice of these songs for learning grammar:
- Present Simple: «As Tears Go By» (The Rolling Stones),
«Don’t Stand So Close to Me» (The Police), «My Name Is Luka» (Suzanne Vega);
- Present Perfect:
«I’ve just called …» (S.Wonder), «I still haven’t found what I’m looking for» (U2),
«Have You Ever Seen the Rain» (Rod Stewart), «I Have Seen It All» (Bjork);
- Past Simple:
«Yellow Submarine» (Beatles), «Because You Loved Me» (Celine Dion), «The Boxer»
(Simon and Garfunkel), «Cockles and Mussels» (Traditional);
- Past Simple and Present Perfect: «My Way»
(Frank Sinatra);
- Past Continuous:
«Does Anybody Really Know What Time it is?» (Chicago);
- Present Perfect
Continuous: «Left Outside Alone» (Anastacia)
Thus, English is a creative subject. Today, learning English involves much more than studying a textbook, doing tests, and putting dictums into practice. So, explore, imagine, experiment and create!

hi, Natalya! you know, this is a truly informative post. it is going to be of great use to anybody who is tired of getting his students to cram rules thoughtlessly (I guess I'll use some tips myself, as I have a student who still cannot understand Present Continuous)... So you may be sure you've made a good job of this post. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I also have a studend, who doesn't get bearings in English grammar at all. So, music helps us!)
